South to San Carlos
We drove from our previous spot, which was only slightly marred by a
late night drunken bass exposition, and an early morning fishing
expedition, to the south. We turned off of Highway 1, and drove 60
kilometers down a dirt road. Very easy driving by Baja standards. It
took slightly under two hours, and was fairly straight forward aside
from occasional silt traps. The van did well with them.
Arriving at the ocean, there was still a marine layer covering the coast.
There wasn’t much to see, but the sea state was complete glass, and
there were occasional sets rolling through. I paddled out on Kates new
board, a 6’4 pintail, and tried for a few. I didn’t do very well, so I
came in and took a SUP around one of the small islands. I was hoping to
find a spot that would be good for spear fishing, but the water was very
murky, and didn’t get any clearer while we were here.
There were a few people with airplanes, and permanent trailers that they
seemed to be living in. The first day we were here we saw two of them
leave, kicking up tremendous dust on their way out. They must live in
San Diego or LA and fly down for the weekend. Seems pretty cool.
The wind never really kicked up until our last day, and I was too scared
to kite. The launch was rocky and down a cliff, and the wind had a fairly
strong offshore component. Instead I surfed, SUPed and Kate checked out
the network of trails that was all over the hills. Someone put in a good
amount of work. I did take the foil board out, and discovered that
wingfoiling is far more difficult than it looks. I will need to try this
some more. I think we are going to go in search of a more friendly
location to try wind sports.
Koda liked this spot more than the others. He spent the majority of the
day under the van, but went for his morning run, and evening walk. Lots
to sniff as a dog. Today he will be in the van for a while, as we drive
a bit more south. We are heading to a big sandy bay, where there won’t
be any waves, but there might be some wind. Unfortunately there is also a
town, so we likely will not stay there for too long.
